THE GALLEY is a private gallery & studio for Betsy & Cara Smith, a mother-daughter duo. We explore photography, painting and creativity in Hull, Massachusetts, a beautiful beach town jutting into the middle of Boston Harbor. Betsy offers original acrylic landscape paintings, abstract acrylic pour paintings, and canvas prints. Cara offers original photograph prints and vintage-style Christmas cards.

I love color and I love nature. I create fluid art and impressionistic landscape paintings. I grew up going to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston every Friday with my mother and love Impressionist paintings. Several years ago, I began painting after taking an art class at the South Shore Art Center. Then while browsing online, I began watching videos about Fluid art. I decided to give it a try. I like fluid art because I never know what is going to happen! It is very exciting and experimental.

I photograph scenes of nature, capturing everything from the minute and abstract beauty of a water drop on a blade of grass to vast ocean vistas along the New England coastline. I also take inspiration from 19th century American landscape painters, some who were inspired by the invention of photography to create photo-realistic paintings. I love to reverse their process and capture in 21st century photography scenes that look like something from an old painting. A favorite subject is Boston Light and the occasional tall ship that sails by, hinting at what the Boston Harbor Channel looked like in the Age of Sail.
